Soccer Will Soon Be America's Third-Favorite Spectator Sport

A poll released last week found that 7% of Americans named soccer as their favorite sport to watch in a survey completed during December. While that may not sound like much, the figure represents a significant, 3% gain from just four years ago. Soccer is the only sport to post such a large increase. Football (37%, down from 39%), basketball (11%, down from 12%) and baseball (9%, down from 13%) all showed declining numbers. Hockey was at 4%, up from 3%.

This poll also came in a year where soccer in the US did not have much success, by not qualifying for the world cup, so the jump in percentage becomes even more apparent. Also the MLS has some ground to make up in the type of talent it brings in compared to the other major sports associations in the US who bring in the top athletes from all over the world, whereas in soccer their are a tremendous amount of foreign clubs and leagues that are held in a higher light the the US's MLS.
